Anhydrous (dehydrated) ammonia, which is commonly used in industrial facilities as a refrigerant for cooling and freezing, is a highly corrosive substance. Its widespread use as a refrigerant is one reason why vacuum pumps have, historically, been considered disposable HVAC tools.
