PHCPPros To Host Webinar On The Future Of Legionella

Next week, the PHCPPros special webinar series will present "Legionella Primer; Where Are We Headed?" Led by Jay and Kristy Egg, the webinar will take place Monday, May 18, at 2:00pm(CST). This webinar series has kept hundreds of readers educated and engaged in the face of COVID-19, as they log on weekly to learn from plumbing, heating, cooling, and piping (PHCP) professionals.

Jay Egg was fascinated when his wife, Kristy Egg, explained that epidemiological studies can be thought of for requiring seat belts in cars, and for the banning of lawn darts. He was even more fascinated to learn about Legionnaires Disease and Pontiac Fever, and why HVAC systems can be such a breeding ground for them.

Legionnaires Disease can only be contracted by inhalation of aerosolized water contaminated with the legionella bacteria. Cooling towers aerosolize water, and which are everywhere. The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) has been protecting the public's health and safety for over 90 years by working in concert with government and industry to implement comprehensive plumbing and mechanical systems around the world. Having served on technical committees with IAPMO since 2015, Jay Egg took notice when asked for a select task group to develop recommendations and guidance to assist in the control and intervention of Legionella associated with mechanical systems. Kristy and Jay Egg decided to put their combined efforts into the Legionella Task Group. After their first meeting, on March 2, they started studying the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) records early from early January. The webinar will showcase what they have learned and more!

Kristy Egg had a head start on such work as a Registered Nurse and student of Public Health/Epidemiology studies at Brigham Young University. She learned to live with the disability of epilepsy and changed paths mid-life. Jay Egg began his career in mechanical design engineering and contracting in 1990. He went on to found EggGeothermal in Florida to provide HVAC solutions to the public energy utility efforts, solar/geothermal exchange implementation, and aquifer related environmental issues, permitting, feasibility and variances or special permitting such as utility-scale geothermal exchange systems.
