Watts To Sponsor PHCPPros Webinar On Emergency Flushing Of Buildings

May 13, 2020

Hundreds have attended the recently launched PHCPPros Special Webinar Series. This webinar series aims to keep readers educated and engaged in the face of COVID-19. The series allows readers to log on each week and learn something new from plumbing, heating, cooling, and piping professionals. The next webinar will be sponsored by Watts, a leading manufacturer of water quality solutions. Covering the topic "Emergency Flushing Of Building Water Systems," the free webinar will be led by Ron George and take place on May 22 at 1:00pm(CST).

George will cover the proper way to perform an emergency flush and disinfection procedure following a lengthy shut-down of a building. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many states to order citizens to stay at home and shelter in place to minimize the spread of a virus. When buildings are shut down for long periods of time, the water in the buildings piping systems will lose its water treatment chemicals as the chemical oxidize or dissipate over time to levels that are too low to control Legionella bacteria and other microorganism growth.

Flushing building water systems prior to building occupancy will be critical to prevent illnesses due to bacteria in stagnant water. This webinar will offer timely and critically important information on how to properly perform and document this procedure. In addition, George will discuss steps to develop a building water safety plan and building water management team to perform a risk assessment of the buildings water systems to assure control of bacteria growth. In addition, he will cover the key points in the ASHRAE 188 Standard titled: Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems and ASHRAE Guideline 12 -2000 Minimizing the Risk of Legionellosis associated with Building Water Systems.

George is a longtime columnist for Plumbing Engineer magazine and the president of Plumb-Tech Design & Consulting Services LLC. George has over 42 years of experience designing plumbing and mechanical systems. He has taught plumbing design and code review classes at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and Oakland Community College. George has also taught numerous plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas seminars around the country. His design experience includes hospitals, hotels, casinos, nursing homes, high rise buildings, convention centers, pro sports stadiums, airports, Industrial manufacturing facilities, schools and universities. He has served on and participated in many plumbing and mechanical product standards committees and plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas code committees. George is a constant advocate for safe plumbing systems and he has developed websites for scald prevention and legionella prevention.

There will also be a representative from Watts, Jana Summey, who will be available during the Q&A portion of the webinar to provide insights from the manufacturer's lens. Summey is the Healthcare Vertical Market Manager at Watts Water Technologies.
